Blessings under Troubling Circumstances “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” James 1:12(NIV)
James 1:2 – Consider it pure joy [not questionable in any way] when you face different kinds of trials and tests. Why?How can we do that?
Vs. 3 Because – the testing of your faith develops perseverance [in you.You will need perseverance to stand the trials of your circumstances.]
Vs. 4Perseverance brings about maturity so that you do not lack in ability.
Vs. 5If any of you lack wisdom, he should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault and it will be given to him.[Notice the ‘if’ in this verse. When we are in a close relationship with God, our faith is based on strength and trust and wisdom, however if you lack in wisdom – go to the God of truth and he will supply you with what you need.Let me say here that at one time or another, regardless of our closeness to God, we will fall short when it coming to making sound decisions. If, however, you are in a constant state of indecision and doubt it is probably because your relationship with God is weak due to lack of reading his word and praying to him.His literal guidance and our open communication with Him are powerful and necessary.]
Vs. 6…believe and not doubt [what advantage does doubting bring? If you enjoy being in a state of confusion – season your walk with doubt and you will be tossed about like a small boat without an anchor.]…like a wave of the sea, tossed and blown by the wind.
Vs. 7, 8That [doubting] man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double minded man, unstable in all he does.[Understand that when you have doubts you have thoughts that have two sides; your testimony of Christ is compromised and your witness loses its credibility – How can God bless that life?]
Have you read anywhere in the scriptures that a faithful walk with God is an easy path?On the contrary, the context here is that there will be trials.Verse 2 says to consider it joy when you face trials not if you face trials. So-
In preparation for those tests, know that along with God’s wisdom (vs. 5)…promised wisdom (vs. 12), He’ll always be with you and that you will never be without him.
Are you struggling right now?Who are you trusting – yourself, society, government, God?Do you doubt the outcome of your future? What are you doing about the circumstances in your life? Are you waiting for someone to rush in to save you? We always need to put feet to our faith for there is no wisdom in waiting for someone else to do what only God can do.
The character of your faith will be revealed in how you respond to your trials. Perseverance builds character and each trial brings strength, wisdom and patience.
